Pierre Emerick -Aubameyang lone goal sealed three points for Arsenal against Newcastle in their Premier League opener on Sunday at the St-James Park.
Newcastle United was close in breaking the deadlock in the opening 20 minutes with Jonjo Shelvy effort crashed against the woodwork.Arsenal maintained most of the ball possession but lack the cutting edge in the opening 25 minutes of the clash, Newcastle pushed forward most times they had the ball on their feet and look to create some opportunities upfront.Arsenal showed a high-quality counter attacker in the 30th minute but Pierre Emerick Aubameyang was unable to add the necessary finish touch to it as Newcastle goalkeeper pulled a good save to deny the former Borussia Dortmund forward the chance to put Arsenal ahead. Arsenal maintained their custom of short passes with causing any damage to their opponent for the entire first half of the clash.
The first 45 minutes ended 0-0 with Newcastle having the best opportunity on goal.The second half started with Arsenal piling up pressure on Newcastle the first opportunity fell to the feet of Aubameyang but the Newcastle goalkeeper did well to prevent any threat form the striker. Aubameyang scored the opener in the 58th minute of the match for Arsenal following a defensive error from Newcastle in the middle of the pitch.Unai Emery introduced Dani Ceballos in the 64th minute for Arsenal teenager Joseph Willock while Nicolas Pepe was also brought on in the 71st minute for Reiss Nelson.Arsenal ensured they subjected Newcastle under their control as they maintain possession of the ball most time, despite the slim lead over the host.The game ended in favour of the Gunners at the St James Park.
